A Retro Projector and the Return of Beautiful Evenings

We started BESUS Retro Cinema with a conviction we couldn’t quite put in a spec sheet: that the past held something beautiful, and that beauty deserved to be carried forward — not archived, not faded into nostalgia, but set back down in the middle of modern life, where it could keep working on us.

You know the feeling we mean. An old film’s warm color. The particular gold of a late afternoon in a photograph from before you were born. Some evenings from your childhood that you couldn’t name a single detail of, except that they were good. Memory keeps almost nothing. It keeps a mood.

And here is what we’ve come to believe about moods: they need somewhere to live. A mood cannot survive on a screen. It needs an object — something with weight, with a switch you turn, with a warm-up, with presence. This is why we make the things we make.

The object that remembers

A retro projector, in our thinking, is less a device than a keeper of evenings. The cream-and-tan body, the knob you actually turn, the leather-textured handle — none of it is decoration. It’s memory made physical. When you click it on, it doesn’t announce itself the way modern electronics do, all startup chimes and blue-white glare. It warms up. It casts a softer, amber light. The room changes temperature before it changes brightness.

That slowness is the point. Beautiful evenings were never fast.

We’ve noticed something in the homes that adopt these pieces: the projector becomes the reason the living room exists again. Not the TV wall, not the phones — the corner with the warm light. Families drift there on Friday nights without anyone suggesting it. Children who fight over tablets will sit, unhurried, for a projected film they’d scroll past on a phone. We don’t fully understand why the same content behaves differently in warm light. We only know that it does, and that people feel it immediately.

What beauty does to a day

We’ll be careful here, because we’re a brand and brands overclaim. So take this as belief, not promise.

We believe beautiful objects change the weather of a house. A room that holds things you find beautiful is a room you recover in. And a person who recovers well in the evening is, in small compounding ways, a luckier person the next morning — more patient, more open, more likely to notice the good thing that was always passing by. Luck, if it’s anything, is the sum of days that went slightly better than they needed to. Beauty tips that arithmetic in your favor.

This is why we obsess over how our pieces look when they’re off. A cream-and-brass projector on a bookshelf earns its place visually every single day, even in daylight, even unplugged. It sits there like a small promise: tonight could be one of those evenings.

The gift of a memory, before it happens

If you’re choosing one as a gift, you’re not buying electronics. You’re pre-packing an evening for someone — the couple furnishing their first place, the father who owns every gadget and needs none of them, the friend who hosts.

Give them a screen and they’ll use it. Give them a warm light and a ritual, and they’ll have Friday nights. We design our gift-box sets around exactly this: the vintage-styled projector paired with the matching retro Bluetooth speaker, so the memory arrives whole — sight and sound from one design family, one mood, one box.

Questions we’re often asked

What is it, actually, for? Slow, social viewing. Movie nights, garden parties with a bedsheet on the fence, a child’s room glowing at dusk. It is a mood product, and proudly not a home-theater workhorse.

Does it need total darkness? No. It’s happiest in a dimmed room at dusk, same as you.

What occasions suit it as a gift? Weddings and housewarmings, first. Then holidays, Father’s Day, and the occasional Tuesday when someone you love has had a long month.

Does it match other pieces? That’s the design idea — projector, speaker, and clock share one styling language, so the collection grows like a shelf story rather than a pile of appliances.

The past was beautiful. We build objects that bring that beauty — and its warmth, and its luck — into the room you’re sitting in now. Explore the BESUS Retro Cinema collection.
